book review

The Wheels on the Race Car by Alexander Zane, illustrated by James Warhola

Cover Image

With the command “Racers…Start your engines!”, this book is off to the finish line.  Readers will immediately recognize the basis for the book, a favorite storytime song Wheels on the Bus.   This energetic story is set at the racetrack, where the “race car on the track goes zip-zip-zip”, and the checkered flag goes “swish-swish-swish”.   Each page features an aspect of the big race, and the endpapers illustrate the motions that accompany each verse.  The illustrations are as action-packed as a real race, with animals staffing the pitcrews and filling the crowds.  The cars even have wildlife appropriate sponsers from “musk see tv” to “llama clocks” and “purrfect pistons”.   A great read aloud for car lovers, singers, and those who like a more energetic story.  Check it out!
